The Faith Community Nurse Network provides at least four professional nursing education symposiums each year for contact hour credit. These programs feature perspectives specific to FCN practice and provide attendees the opportunity to learn, share, and network. In 2024, we will offer a mix of virtual as well as hybrid events. Events will be recorded and distributed to those registered.
2024 Symposium Details
“It is important to understand how ubiquitous trauma is in our society, what devastating effects it has on family life, workplace productivity, the ability to learn and take initiative, the ability to stay calm and focused, and the capacity to be compassionate…” (Bessel Van Der Kolk, Author: The Body Keeps the Score.)
Were you aware that:
- 1:4 members of a faith community have experienced a traumatic event in their lives that has had lasting effects on their physical, emotional, and/or spiritual health?
- Persons who have experienced 6 or more traumatic events are much more likely to suffer from mental illness, chronic diseases and their life span may be shortened by many years?
- Faith communities and health professionals can, unknowingly, re-traumatize these survivors by not understanding what trauma-informed care is?
We’re all aware of the mental health crisis in our country but may not realize the close connection between mental health disorders and traumatic events. Traumatic events can wound people by affecting their self-worth, their beliefs about the world, their judgment, decision-making and their whole-person health.
